Wordie Wednesday | The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories, 2

When I was earning my master’s degree and writing countless essays, I loved using long, drawn out sentences and complicated vocabulary; after all, I figured, I might as well flaunt my writing skills!  It wasn’t until one of my professors pointed out the word “utilize” in one of my papers and asked, “why not use the word ‘use’ here?” that I had a breakthrough: more often than not, the simpler, less complex route is best.  I found my writing, when stripped down of all the complex turns of thought and fancy words, was better (even though I really missed using a lot of the words I had accumulated over the years).

I try to apply the same perspective toward life and my business– why make anything more complex than it needs to be?  Simplicity is the way to go!

It’s for these reasons above that I really appreciated reading The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories: 2, put together by Joseph Gordon-Levitt (yes, THAT Joseph) and wirrow.  The duo asks for people to writers “tiny stories,” all of which are only as long as a short sentence, and also asked for artists to collaborate illustrations to accompany these poetic pieces.  The finished collection is gorgeously rendered with thoughtful, insightful, and sometimes hilarious stories and images that’s going to add something special to a bookshelf.

You can view some of the stories here to get a taste of what The Tiny Book offers, but here’s a couple of my favorite stories:

“As my story came to a close I realized I was the villain all along” pg. 74

“One day she looked up and discovered an opening in her planet.  She wondered if she wasn’t alone after all.” pg 8

Awesome, right?  I refuse to share any more (or the artwork) because I want you to pick this up and go support hitRECord, as they support the collaboration that makes The Tiny Book possible.  Let me know what you think about it once you read it!
