A Few of My Favorite Things | Winter Edition

There are days when there is lightly falling snow and I have nowhere to be that I am all for winter, but today is not one of them.  I strongly believe that our entering into March should result in some signs of spring, and while, yes, I admit that although it has been more temperate recently, the fact that the snow hasn't melted away makes me a little bit bitter.  There would be nothing better than to see every little speck gone and to begin to wonder when the first tulips and crocuses will bloom, but alas-- I think I need to wait a couple of months.

Waiting was never my strong suit.

Nevertheless, as much as I want to pout about Maine's terribly long winters when March comes along with snowstorms and chilly temperatures, I try to focus on the things that make my life awesome.  And so, this post, born out of an attempt to not pout about the bracingly cold air when I head out for post office runs, shares a few of the things that has made winter decent, if not, truth be told, wonderful.

LL Bean boots

One of the few things I love about winter is the ability to wear boots all season.  I received a pair of LL Bean boots for Christmas and love how classic and preppy they make me feel.  Plus, they're comfortable, which is a huge plus for this gal who tends to care more about function than flair.  I now want a traditional pair for the days when I'm feeling a little more nautical.

Florida vacation

As I said above, I'm not a fan of winter.  I stay in Maine only because of family and friends and because Maine summers are simply glorious, but I'm not much of a happy camper once winter rolls around.  I was quite happy to escape from New England for a week and spend it lounging in temperate Florida weather.  Can I go back to Florida, please?  Surely one of you would like to have your wedding in Florida and send me there to capture your special day, right? :)

Short Hair

I've always had long hair, save for the 8th grade when I thought it would be a great idea to get a pixie cut (just so you know, it ended up being a terrible idea, and no, I'm not going to share those photos with you).  When I went into the hair salon last month I felt like I needed a change, so I asked to have my hair chopped right to my shoulders.  I worried I might miss having long locks, but so far I'm loving my tangle-free hair!

Battlestar Galactica

Battlestar Galactica is one of my all-time favorite television shows.  It's brilliant.  I it has this reputation as a nerdy sci-fi show, but it's really a fascinating drama that is more than just an action space thriller-- it's a philosophical reflection on who we are as a society post 9/11.  I just finished rewatching it and am addicted all over again, and my experience with it is just like how Portlandia (ALSO another awesome show) depicts it.

Glasses

I have awful eyesight and mainly wear contacts to correct my vision, but since my eyesight is so poor I sometimes need to abandon my contacts in favor of glasses to give my eyes a bit of a break.  My old glasses, which I had had since 2005, were so scratched and beat up that I hated to wear them.  I was gifted a new pair for my birthday and am in awe by how everything looks crisper-- it's not unlike the first time I got glasses in second grade and marveled at how I could see the buds on each tree branch.  I still love my contacts best, but it's no longer a chore to wear glasses!

There are a couple of other things that deserve to be mentioned, but they deserve blog posts of their own.  What are you currently loving this winter?  Please, help me find ways to not think about Maine's neverending winter season!
