When people asked me what my plans were for after finishing my master's degree in English, I'd tell them that I wanted to be a high school English teacher. I had taught College Composition at the University of Maine for a year and always loved seeing my students develop the ability to articulately voice their ideas and become more creative and fluent thinkers.
It was pretty exhilarating, and while I never did end up teaching (it never really felt like my dream job, to be honest), I've always loved helping people strengthen their own skill sets and become adept at various tasks. I can't help but get excited when someone learns something that really makes them giddy-- it's infectious!
Because I like to teach every now and then, on a case by case basis I mentor individuals who want to learn more about photography. Sarah, a fellow teacher herself (rock on!) has always loved photography and owns a DSLR, but didn't really know how to use it in manual. We worked together for a few hours on Sunday to discuss how to manipulate camera settings into creating a correct exposure and then worked with her gorgeous friend, Kate, to put what she learned into action and to explore great portrait lighting. Sarah was totally awesome and picked up the basics right away, and Kate was such a patient (and stunning!) model. I mean, look at her!
